Gateway To Success' mission is to increase the number of African American General Counsel and Board of Directors in Corporate America and enchance careers through education and networking. The Gateway To Success Awards Luncheon will recognize Wiley Adams, Vice President and Chief Legal Officer of PGIM, Inc. for his excellent leadership and for providing gateways and opportunities for success to many corporate lawyers, his corporate institution, and his community.

9:00 am – 10:30 am - Beyond Bitcoin: What Every General Counsel Should know about Digital Currencies and Smart Contracts Objective: Leading Corporate Counsel and digital currency experts will discuss the next wave in digital currencies and how smart contracts can enhance contract review and increase productivity in transactional work. Furthermore, regulatory developments in digital currencies, initial coin offerings and tokens will be presented. (1 CLE, .5 ethics)

10:30 – 11:30 - Compliance - 10 things Every General Counsel Should Know and Monitor Objective: Managing Partners, Compliance Officers, and General Counsel will discuss the intersection of the Chief Compliance Officer and General Counsel Roles (often duo roles) when serving the corporation. Additionally, the leaders will provide hands on training on creating an effective program that addresses assessing operational risks and how to tailor solutions to the corporation’s circumstances. (1 CLE, .5 ethics)

11:30 am – 11:50 am - Quick Talk- How to Move into the Role of Chief Compliance Officer

1:00– 2:15 pm – General Counsel Roundtable - General Counsel Panel - the Roles and Responsibilities – General Counsel as strategic Business Partner. Objective: Leading industry experts will discuss corporate trends important to the general counsel role including Corporate Governance, the General Counsel role in protecting the corporation in the wake of the #Metoomovement, recruiting during times of low unemployment rates, increased talent immigration, and the global corporation. (1 CLE credit, .5Ethics)

2:15 pm – 3:15 pm The Road to General Counsel – What is the Gateway? Objective: The Experienced Panel will discuss the soft skills, hard skills, experience and networks needed to reach the General Counsel level. The Panel of Senior Leaders will discuss the steps to take in the next 90, 180, and 365 days to reach the General Counsel level for Corporate Counsel and Outside Counsel. The panel discussion will include the evolution of the General Counsel role, skill set assessments and how to develop needed skills, how to increase your visibility. Additionally, succession, and recruiting trends will be discussed. Finally, the characteristics of a high-performing General Counsel including emotional intelligence, how to build a strong legal department and the General Counsel as a Strategic Partner including contributions to company’s goals and playing an active role in the business, and responsibilities to the board and role in the board room will be presented. (The 2025 Initiative and pipeline to General Counsel).

3:40 – 4:50 pm – Gateway To Becoming a Member of the Board of Directors for a Major Corporation and Responsibilities. Objective: Don’t forget the duties, rewards, and risks. Consider the new California Law; will a bill like Senate Bill 826, which requires any publicly held corporation headquartered in California to have a "representative number of women on its board of directors, come to a state near you? The law will require hundreds of companies to make changes to their current boards. (1 CLE credit)

4:50 – 5:50 pm - Dollars and More Dollars Objective: Know the company financials and the handwriting on the wall – mergers, take overs, and reduction in force. Additionally, understanding accounting factors is often one of the most important factors relevant to legal matters such as the purchase and sale of companies, contractual disputes, as well as company compliance. This presentation and discussion will alert lawyers to the key issues in reviewing accounts and advising corporate clients plus the recent changes in the law and accounting standards. (1 CLE credit)
